The cut through project began November 1973, it was completed in 14 years, at a cost of $80 million. It created a 3/4 mile long channel through Peach Orchard Mountain. It provided path for the railroad tracks, a fork of the Big Sandy River, and Highways 23,460,119,and KY 80. It created 400 acres of usable land for the city's expansion. The Pikeville Cut Through is an engineering marvel. It is one of the country's largest and most spectacular engineering feats. The Cut itself is 1300 feet wide, 3700 feet long, and 523 feet deep. It is called the 8th wonder of the world. Pikeville was included in The 100 Best Small Towns in America.
Today it was in the 60's and cloudy this AM. Where we are staying is part way up the mountain along side of the Cut (as they call it here) Unbelievable views all around.
