10/21/10 from David

David sent this to me I thought that it was nice. You can download it and use it on your dart board.

We are still in Willow Spring NC and will be here until next Monday the First of Nov. Tonight Kathy, Patty, Harden, Peggy, and myself all went out to a BBQ restaurant. Good BBQ, a little different tasting then the northern style of BBQ, but good. Kathy and Peggy have been painting Kathy's Kitchen, hallway, and front room. Tomorrow is shopping day for all three of them. When we leave on Monday we will be heading south somewhere. On our way westward we are going to stop and see Jeff, Crystal, and kids. We will stay in the campground where John and Linda are staying. They are at the Pelican Palms RV Park in Milton Florida. Jeff is stationed on the Navy air base there.
It has been very nice weather here, cool at night and warm during the day. We will take some more pictures of everyone here and post them later.

Willow Spring

The pond sure looks nice, lots of fish, they even come when Hardin calls them. The picture on the left is the overflow from the pond. It has a steady stream all the time.
Their land goes back into the woods for a short way.
There is   a  large amount of lawn to mow, also many  flower beds to take care of. The ducks are pets of Patty. She sure takes good care of them. There are also two dogs that live here. The building behind their house is the garage/workshop, the second floor is an apartment.

Willow spring, NC

We arrived at Willow Spring on, 10/22/2010. A very nice day sunny and warm. Spent the rest of the day and evening visiting. We are all set up here and in a nice spot on the side of their driveway, in their very long front yard.

Thursday 10-21-2010 Max Meadows, VA.

This morning we left Pikeville KY. headed to Willow Spring NC. We stopped for the night at the Fort Chiswell RV Campground, in Max Meadows, Virginia. We should be in Willow  Spring tomorrow afternoon. The trip has been a nice one lots of color out now. The route we took for part of the way was the Country Music Highway, US23 south. It has many breath taking views, with lots of hills, curves, through the mountains and a very enjoyable ride with a small amount of traffic. The picture is the start of the driveway up to Loretta Lynn's childhood home. The picture makes it look a lot better than it is.

paintsville ky

Today, Monday 10/18/10, we went to Paintsville KY. which is about 35 miles north of Pikeville. Looking at the photos should tell you where we were. This alone was worth the short drive. It was a nice day, sunny and warm. The picture of a store is on the way to her birthplace, it is owned by her brother, and still being used by the local people. Going to her childhood home is a 1 1/2 lane road with the mountain on one side and a drop off on the other. The type of road you just hope that you don't meet anyone coming the other way. It was about a 3 mile ride into the back country to get to her birthplace. If you are wondering, yes, it is the outhouse, and yes, it is the only one there. Peggy said that she just had to sit where both Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle have sat.

Today we went to the Dils cemetery. A very interesting place. Very old and not kept up very well. It is a very steep clime up to the top. It was sad to see all of graves left with the markers falling over, and all covered with grass, leaves and weeds. The cemetery is on the top of a mountain that runs along beside the city, with a great view of the city from there. There are lots of plastic flowers on some of the graves. Many are unmarked, but it shows that someone is buried there.

The Pikeville KY cut through.

The cut through project began November 1973, it was completed in 14 years, at a cost of $80 million. It created a 3/4 mile long channel through Peach Orchard Mountain. It provided path for the railroad tracks, a fork of the Big Sandy River, and Highways 23,460,119,and KY 80. It created 400 acres of usable land for the city's expansion. The Pikeville Cut Through is an engineering marvel. It is one of the country's largest and most spectacular engineering feats. The Cut itself is 1300 feet wide, 3700 feet long, and 523 feet deep. It is called the 8th wonder of the world. Pikeville was included in The 100 Best Small Towns in America.

Today it was in the 60's and cloudy this AM. Where we are staying is part way up the mountain along side of the Cut (as they call it here) Unbelievable views all around.

Pikeville KY

We arrived in Pikeville yesterday at 3:00, it was a cloudy day but  warm. The city has a RV Park with full hook ups, a very nice 18 site park, it is new this year. We went into the town of Pikeville in the evening for a look and something to eat. The town is long and narrow in a valley between the two mountain's. A very nice clean looking place. This morning at 0430 when I got up it was raining and a little cool. We are looking forward to doing some site seeing today.

Today we are in Crittendon KY. We arrived yesterday and will be leaving later today for Pikeville KY. We will stay there for at least 8 days. This am the sun is bright and warming up fast. We are just getting use to using this blog, and hope that we will be able to keep anyone wanting to know what is up with us, and where we are, or have been, or where we are going next, or interesting things we see along the way. We hope to be able to add pictures to our posts, as soon as we figure out how to do so. Take care, Peggy and Lee
