Pelican Palms RV Park

John and Linda's new travel trailer.

The nature trail was very nice. They had all kinds of things to see on the trail. At every turn there was something to see. A bridge over Pelican Palms creek, benches to rest on, deer trails, odd things like a skull sitting on a camp stool, birds, and many other things to see.
No rattle snakes when I went. :>)
The campground was very well kept up and looking good. It was to cold for the pool, at least for the old folk anyway. We were only a couple of sites over from John and Linda. Their grandkids came to stay with them every week-end from Friday to Sunday night. It was Corey's idea to take us to see the Railroad Depot in Badgad. (see other post of the Depot).
Sure enjoyed the time with the kids.

I got behind, and not in order, with the posting of some of the things we have been doing. It seems like we have been so busy visiting and doing things I just didn't take the time to do it. That is one reason that all posting is not in the order of how did them. So now I am playing catch-up. I will post some of the Navy air museum pictures next. If I can find them where they were down loaded on our computer. That also has been somewhat of a problem. Then we will be up to date with everything up to Kerrville TX. where we are now for the month of December, before we head out for Big Bend Nat. Park. Jan. 3. 2011

A nice park here near Badgad Florida. Did lots of things with John and Linda. Spent some time with Jeff and Crystal and also Corey and Kateyln.  We also went to the Pensacola Navy air base with John and Linda and went to the air museum. I will post some of the pictures later.
That was really something to see. All kinds of real Navy airplanes everywhere, hanging from the ceiling, on the walls as well as all over on the main floor. Took a tour on of the outside area on a site seeing trolley. There are many planes sitting outside waiting their turn to be brought back to the hangers where they are reconditioned and added to the collection of planes. They even had five older blue angels planes in formation hanging from the ceiling in the main building. That alone was worth the trip there. They all were great hosts, it was very nice to see everyone.
They sure made us feel loved and welcome. Thanks to all for such a great stay, and good time.
For those who don't know John and linda , they are son and daughter in law, Jeff and Crystal are Grand children, Corey and Katelyn are great grandkids.

Fort Pickens

This Fort is one of the nicest we have seen out of the many that we have been to.  It was a cool day, but a nice one. John and Linda took us to visit this Fort. This was one of four forts built to defend Pensacola Bay and its Navy yard. They started to build the fort in 1829, completed it in 1834, and it was used until 1947. Over 21.5 million bricks were used. They were made locally and barged to the island. The union remained in control of the fort all through the Civil War. It was constructed mainly by African American slave labor. The cannon below is a 12 inch smooth bore, the other cannon shown is a 15 inch smooth bore. The cannons had a range of about one mile, the larger cannons used projectiles weighing 1,070 pounds and were propelled by 275 pounds of smokeless powder, and had a range of up to 8 miles. On June 20, 1899 Bastion D was destroyed because of a fire. The magazine contained 8,000 lbs of powder. In the explosion it showered debris 1.5 miles away. You can see in one picture where the whole wall was destroyed. And you can see just how thick the walls are.

John and Linda took us to the old railroad depot in Bagdad Fl. Very interesting place. My camera is new and for some reason I had it set on "movie" and didn't know it until I tried to download the pictures on here. So this is all I could download. It is nice to get older but I wish my brain wouldn't. It seems like my remembering section is getting worse.

Okeefenokee Swamp in Waycross,GA.

Obediah's Okefenok is a very interesting place to visit. It is right in the swamp. To get back to it there is a wooden walkway through the swamp about a 1/4 of a mile. The entrance is shown on the left.
We have more pictures of the swamp. Will post them asap.
The Kitchen is on the right.

Blythe Island area

Today, Nov. 3, we went to "Jekyll Island" for the day. We toured the whole island and even drove all the way around on one of the few roads that they have there. The convention center area was closed for the filming of another new movie being made called "X men". We did the tourist things, Horton house, fishing pier, walked along the beach, went to the Historic District, the marina, saw many things of interest. It was nice but not what, or all, that I expected it to be. We took many pictures. I will just post a few of them.
Above is the viewing platform that looks out over the salt marsh on the right. Below left is Peggy and some of the driftwood along the beach.

We have no idea why the dog below is painted like it is, But we have seen a couple of them painted like the one below, but with other pictures on the dog.
Above is the fishing pier on the Island, and Peggy walking to the old burial place of the Horton house family, during the 1800's. Left is the "Jekyll Island Club Hotel" built in the late 1800's with Queen Anne architectural style including the towers, turrets, wrap around porches. The Clubhouse served as a winter retreat for very wealthy industrialists and bankers of the time.
